An entire hotel made of snow and ice

Huge amounts of snow, ice and muscle power are needed to build a special kind of hotel below the 2,224-metre-high Nebelhorn summit to create a very special kind of hotel. A total of 14 sleeping igloos, a suite, a bar and a restaurant are erected by the builders of the ice hotel every December to welcome the first guests with shining eyes shortly after Christmas.

Artists, stonemasons and sculptors from the region create the special atmosphere in the Allgäu ice hotel. They realize the annually changing motto inside the igloos in the form of sculptures and ice carvings. “We've had everything from giant mammoths to exotic plants and underwater worlds, all made of snow and ice! ”, say the operators happily.

Sauna under the stars - nobody has to do without “wellness” at the Iglu Lodge. Cozy barrel saunas are available for all guests, which can be enjoyed after a warming drink at the ice bar and an exciting round of “Zipfelbob” on the lodge's own race track, there is plenty of time to relax.

Before going to bed, the organizers recommend taking a look at the night sky, because at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters above sea level, the otherwise disturbing light sources of the cities are very far away and the starry sky is therefore even more magnificent. During the day, the view is no less impressive: on a clear day, you can see more than 400 Alpine peaks from the Nebelhorn.

Zünftiger Käs‘ (hearty cheese) and Alpengaudi (alpine fun) – Home-made cheese fondue is served in the restaurant, of course with real Allgäu cheese. The nightcap at the igloo bar, also made of ice of course, is automatically chilled and will get you dancing to the loud music.

Nature experience in a class of its own - simply getting away from everyday life, a special nature experience or the most intensive contact possible with the Allgäu winter - the motivations for an overnight stay in an igloo are many and varied. Perfect for couples, friends or anyone who wants to be together, the ‘Romantic Igloo’ category is the right choice. For groups of friends, families or anyone who likes company ‘Dream Igloos’ are available. As a special feature, every season there is a suite! It has a table made of ice and a comfortable couch - not to mention a private hot tub and exclusive ice art.

Great climate - ‘It's not as cold in the igloos as I expected’, say the overnight guests again and again. Of course, this is also due to the equipment in the igloos! The snowbeds are covered with layer of insulation, real Nordland reindeer skins and the warm expedition sleeping bags, which ensure cosy hours at night.

Tea on a cosy snow bed - To refresh each guest in the morning, the guides bring a warm tea to their sleeping bag. Then it's off to the nearby Höfatsblick market restaurant for a hearty breakfast with a perfect view of the Allgäu peaks.

Information: The Iglu Lodge can be reached with the Nebelhorn cable car from Oberstdorf. There are igloos for two and four people as well as an igloo suite with an exclusive hot tub.
